Amanda recently cared for a patient with congenital hydrocephalus. Babies like this are a challenge to care for in many ways. Amanda regularly sought strategies to improve her quality of life by involving her family in bathing and caring for this critically ill infant. She cared for this baby with the love that any parent would want for their baby in their absence (they had several other children). When we did not have a cap to fit her unusually large head size, she worked with another nurse to create a colorful (and very pretty) cap made with ribbons and ties that would secure her breathing apparatus and make her look pretty at the same time. She was a huge advocate for the family and came to the NICU on her day off (at the family's request) when treatment was withdrawn and the baby left this world peacefully.
