Donita Adams

On a high capacity alert day, Donita was working her first of 3 consecutive 12 hour shifts. She received a patient in the Center for Women and Infants (CWI) from a medical unit. This patient had been an inpatient for several weeks and had been on several units with multiple diagnoses. She was a very comprehensive patient with intense needs and concerns. Her many physicians were unable to agree on the best plan of care. She was in a lot of pain, a fall risk, and emotionally having a hard time. Spiritually she was battling due to being a Jehovah Witness and accepting two blood transfusions. Donita was amazing with this patient, when a bed became available the next day on the medical unit, she was a true patient advocate and put the patient’s needs first and said she felt it would be in the patient’s best interest to stay on CWI. “This patient has been bounced all around this hospital. She needs to know we care about her and that we WANT to take care of her.” On day three, there was laughter coming from the patient’s room and she was getting well enough that they hoped to be able to send her home on IV nutrition in the next couple of days. The patient said “Donita is an angel. She made me want to get better. She gave me hope.” |
