Ed Schmid

I observed some of the most extraordinary personalized nursing care I have seen in years given by Ed Schmid to a teenaged boy in the PICU with a new cervical spine fracture. Ed shared his personal story of spine injury and recovery with this patient in a very touching and personal way. This young man could not even speak to ask questions, but Ed stood by with a write board so the patient could write some of his questions. Ed patiently shared very personal and pertinent information that helped this young man understand and begin to accept what lies in front of him. It was a very powerful and moving example of exceptional nursing care that took into account this young man’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Ed gives compassionate care all the time, but this time it brought tears to my eyes...this patient and his family will NEVER forget that interaction...and they told me that later.
