Jacki (Jacqueline) Bennett, RN

Pediatrics, Winchester Medical Center

Winchester, Virginia

Recently, Jacqueline was instrumental in helping a staff nurse with a domestic dispute that arose on the PEDS unit between a patient’s father and the boyfriend of the patient’s mother.  She was an outstanding role model throughout the whole situation.  She remained calm, but authoritative with the men/family members involved.  Being the newest staff member on the PEDS unit, I had never dealt with an issue like this before so it was a great learning experience for me.  She was able to intervene before any physical violence occurred between the parties, and helped to de-escalate the situation so that we didn’t have to call the police to escort anyone off hospital premises.  Her commitment to excellence shows through in many ways, but what was visible that night was how she convinced the parties involved to focus on the patient and his needs.  She was able to get the parties involved to come to an agreement regarding visitation of the patient while hospitalized to prevent any other episodes of domestic dispute in the hospital.  In doing this, you can see her compassionate care of the patient because she wanted to make sure this situation didn’t occur again.  (The patient was very upset and crying during the shouting spells as each man that was involved was leaning over the patient’s bed screaming at the other man on the other side of the bed.)  The patient was terrified during the whole ordeal but Jacqueline comforted him while another nurse called the security officers to the room.  She also exhibited excellent decision-making skills when she escorted the parties involved to another room so that a visitation agreement could be made without the patient being present.  She worked collaboratively with the healthcare team to meet the patient and family needs.

I love working with Jacqueline.

She is a very happy individual and a very positive person to work with.  I can tell that she absolutely loves being a nurse.  Also, she is always willing to help her co-workers out in any circumstance.  She also mentors students that come to the PEDS unit and promotes a learning environment.

She is currently in college and working towards her Nurse Practitioner degree.  Her critical thinking and decision making skills are top notch.  I highly recommend Jacqueline for the DAISY Award.
