Josie Squires, RN3

Assistant Nurse Manager, 4East, Medicine/Geriatrics, Harborview Medical Center

Seattle, Washington

Josie was nominated by three coworkers who had these kind words to say of her:

Where do I begin as to how she contributes to the patients on 4 East daily?  The most recent time was when she gave her shoes to a patient who had lost one and did not have any resources to buy another pair.  Or another time when an elderly couple living on a limited income needed to pick up their meds in the DC Pharmacy and could not pay the co-pay of $19.00.  The next thing I know she was delivering their medication to the patient’s bedside. Only Josie and I knew that there was a co-pay.  She quietly gave them their medication and said nothing about the co-pay.  She brings clothes in to patients who have nothing.  There was a patient last year who would not eat and was so lonely; she took the time to visit with him to find out what his favorite foods were.  He liked Ezell’s Chicken and she would bring him meals from there.  I think she just likes to see them smile and lets patients know that she cares.  Josie does all of this humbly and quietly. She is an extremely kind and giving person.  It is a pleasure to work along side of her!

Josie has been a nurse at HMC for over 20 years.  She is an RN3 and works mostly as a charge RN.  Josie consistently demonstrates a humble knowledgeable and giving nature.  She brings clothing in for patients, shoes and other much needed supplies.  No matter how stressful and chaotic our floor gets, she is always available to help, is calm and is the go to person with any questions.  Her energy is contagious; she always has a kind word to offer and a smile on her face.  I never hesitate to ask her questions or for her help and she ALWAYS makes time for all staff.  Josie does all of this quietly, day after day in a very humble manner.  She does all of this because she truly cares about our patients and our staff.  She demonstrates all of the characteristics that every staff member should aspire to.  She represents all that the DAISY Award stands for.

Josie is the most giving RN; not only of her time, but of herself as well. Josie cares so much for the unit, the staff, and the patients we care for. Josie constantly attempts to balance the unit and give positive feedback to staff. As an RN3 she is an accomplished leader and a role model for staff. Josie remains up on all the latest updates from clinical education and if she doesn't know the answer she will find out for you. Josie has taken it upon herself to help patients pay for medications when needed. She is the most giving nurse and person.
