Kathy Harris, RN

Cath Lab, Tucson Medical Center

Tucson, Arizona

Kathy takes care of patients undergoing very complicated procedures.  Kathy collaborates professionally with all of the Doctors and they rely heavily on her expert nursing skills. She effectively monitors patients closely and works proactively to reduce risks and complications.  Kathy also demonstrates professional communication skills with family and assists to keep family members updated to help decrease their anxiety/stress levels as they await these complicated procedures.  Kathy is able to communicate in a manner that makes it easier for family to understand these complex, high tech procedures.

An example is the case of a very active 90 year-old lady with a large arteriovenous fistula behind her right eye which caused a pounding noise in her head making it difficult for her to carry out her usual daily activities and it also interfered with sleep.  This patient was very anxious about her procedure and being hospitalized.  Kathy immediately put her at ease with her caring and compassionate manner. The patient’s family was from out of town, and Kathy kept the family well informed of the patient’s status as the procedure progressed.  The procedure was a success, the patient was discharged 2 days later, and the patient said “she was especially grateful to Kathy for helping her get through this stressful experience, and said it was like having a member of her family with her during the procedure”.

Kathy Harris never forgets that her primary responsibility is to her patients. She is always willing to go the extra mile.  Kathy also recognizes the importance of patient safety during these procedures by making sure all relevant information is properly documented and established protocols are followed.  Kathy Harris consistently demonstrates professionalism, skill and experience, and excellent communication skills in a warm and friendly manner. She maintains a positive, caring attitude in her approach to patients and family members as well as her interactions with co-workers and physicians.

I believe she epitomizes what it means to be a nurse especially today with all of the pressures the nursing profession is under in our current health care system. Kathy deserves to be a DAISY Award Honoree.
