Lucy Foster

Lucy Foster is a PICU nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital and has been chosen as the recipient for the first DAISY Award presented at Yale. Lucy has been nominated by her peer Thomas Martin for her tremendous compassion for her work and the care and connections she develops with her patients and families. In particular Lucy had a patient she cared for on many occasions who was admitted to the PICU with respiratory failure due to a underlying diagnosis of spinal muscle atrophy. She had developed a strong bond with the family. The patient became very sick and when the family decided to withdraw care for their child the timing was planned by the family so that Lucy could be the nurse at the bedside. When the child was taken off the ventilator, Lucy was there supporting and caring for the family in an amazingly caring, connected and compassionate way. Her efforts allowed the parents to focus solely on their child. “In every way Lucy Foster models the attributes of a DAISY award winner.”
