Mary Balbo

On February 2, Mary Balbo will celebrate her 35th anniversary with MaineGeneral Medical Center. It is impossible to fully appreciate Mary and the mark she has made, unless you know a bit of her history. Today we celebrate Mary’s compassionate care, memorable moments, and clinical skill. Mary leads a non-traditional life style. Her ‘back to the basic’ choices, also, influence her belief in focusing on the basic human needs of her patients. Mary has been a champion of Relationship Based Care philosophy, long before we had a name for it. RBC says “People are most satisfied when their roles and daily work practices are in alignment with their personal and professional values” Mary lives her personal goals, does not judge, she finds the good in people. Mary’s professional values are driven by what the patient and family desire, which has included a sibling sleep over and feeding an entire family with no money for food. Besides being a nurse, Mary is a reformer and humanitarian. She challenges the status quo by asking ‘why?, never settling for ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it.’ She’s always looking for an easier way to do the right thing by her patients. Mary’s clinical skills are outstanding. Mary has a special gift in caring for children, and has spent 33 rewarding years as a Pediatric Nurse. Mary quickly connects with patients of all ages. Mary’s sympathy for the sick and distressed coupled with her vast experience, knowledge, keen mind, and intellect make her a treasure among us. Fortunately for us, Mary has recently re-invented herself and joined the Float Pool. Now, each floor on both campuses benefit from knowing and working with Mary. Mary, we are proud to witness your optimism, smile, tears, laughter, and most of all your courage. Here is Mary's most recent nomination: Being an RN isn’t just Mary’s job, it’s her life. Every night Mary works she offers all her patients a back rub. Mary has her whole heart into her profession where she will feel, cry, and laugh with her patients. Working in the health field takes one of a kind. She is never afraid to help the rest of the floor with ANYTHING!! Mary is so special for many reasons-some of them being: *Every patient is important to her *She is a holistic caregiver *She possesses an excellent skills set *Always learning and teaching *Generous and thoughtful caring person
