Maryam Polan, RN

Operating Room, Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center

Los Angeles, California

Too often we forget to recognize the actions of the other nurses who are unsung heroes of Kaiser Permanente, the nurses who are behind the scenes and are directly responsible for the smooth running of this hospital and are accountable for the performance of others to ensure high quality care.

One such nurse is Maryam Polan. Maryam has been with Kaiser for 18 years and currently works as an OR Assistant Department Administrator. She is a tenacious, and effective manager, she uses a combination of interpersonal skills, and her knowledge of the OR to make difficult staff utilization and budgeting decisions. She implements processes to evaluate and improve patient quality of care. Maryam's sensitivity to employee needs and caring is evident as she also helps, and is open to resolve human resource, department safety and risk management issues.

Although Maryam does not provide direct bedside patient care, every patient is touched by the methods and processes she helps implement in the department. The level of care the patients receive in the OR is a direct effect of a department leader. Maryam is one of our unsung heroes and I strongly believe she deserves The DAISY Award.
