Monica Sanchez

“I was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and within a week I was undergoing major surgery. Unfortunately, it was during Christmas week so I spent the holidays in the hospital, away from my family. All of the nurses that cared for me were very nice and professional. One nurse was exceptional. She didn’t do any magic tricks or chart wheels; she was just extraordinary in the way she cared. Her name is Monica Sanchez. Monica was my night nurse. She was kind, sincere and real. She made me feel as if she actually cared for me as a person and that she was happy to see me as well. Each night she woke me up and helped me get out of bed to use the restroom. She always came with an armful of towels and washcloths, and made sure I had enough soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste. After being in bed all day, being clean was something that I really looked forward to. After bathing, I returned to my bed each night and the bed was straightened or changed. Such a little thing is soooo important. There are not many things to look forward to during a hospital stay and the little things should not be overlooked. Monica treated me as a person and most importantly, she gave me my dignity each and every night. I thank God for people like Monica who recognize that patients are people.”
