Natoya McKnight, RN

Neurology, Baptist Memorial Hospital

Memphis, Tennessee

It was the 3p-7p shift and Natoya had already given report on this patient to another nurse.  Earlier that day she had shared with me that she and this patient had built a rapport.  The patient was in the hospital with a head injury.  He had a drain in his head post surgery.  He got a visit from someone in the business office.  This individual told him about his hospital bill.  It upset the patient so badly that he just got up and left the hospital.  There was no one that could convince him to stay.  I found Natoya and told her that one of her old patient’s had left, “against medical advice.”  Natoya immediately found his wife’s cell phone number and called her.  She and the patient were approaching the bridge, on their way into Arkansas.  Natoya was able to convince him to come back to the hospital.  This time he stayed until he was discharged.  Even though Natoya had received another assignment down the hall, she remained this patient’s nurse until the end of her shift.  As a charge and head nurse, I am grateful to have someone this caring and dedicated on my team.
