Nicole Brent, RN

Telemetry, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center

Nashua, New Hampshire

Nicole Brent, RN, truly advocates for her patients, ensuring all their needs are met.

One of Nicole's patients, who was admitted to the telemetry unit with a diagnosis of pneumonia and metastatic cancer, was experiencing significant EKG changes consistent with myocardial infarction (STEMI). Nicole notified the doctor on call who wanted to initiate the STEMI team.

"Having developed a relationship with the patient and family throughout the day, Nicole advocated for her patient to avoid an invasive procedure since the patient was terminally ill with a short time to live," wrote her nominator. Because the patient was not in pain and her vital signs were stable, it was eventually determined by the on-call doctor and the patient's oncologist that comfort measures only be provided.

The patient's husband expressed that this course of action would be what his wife wanted. "Nicole stayed with her patient long after her scheduled shift to make sure the patient's expressed needs were met," noted her nominator.
