Seta Nanor Sekayan, RN

7N CCU, UCLA Health System

Los Angeles, California

I met Nanor on Nov. 13th in my grandfather's room. My grandfather was basically on life support in the cardiac care unit. My husband and I were alone in the room with Papa feeling helpless and saddened by his condition. Nanor quietly entered the room and introduced herself. She had a positive and caring energy. Without needing to ask, Nanor began to speak about Papa's condition in a realistic, but compassionate way. She told us that this is a beautiful time in my grandfather's life - a transition. The most important thing Nanor said to me was this was not a choice for my mom to make or for any one of us to make, but rather to think we are giving the decision back to my grandfather. This relieved me from worry about guilt or fear of making the wrong decision. Nanor helped me come to terms with my grandfather's death. On Nov. 15th, Nanor spent some time speaking to my mother and me even though she was not my grandfather's nurse that day. She gave us comfort and assured us that we were doing the right thing by giving control back to my grandfather. She visited us again at the end of her shift. She said we could have the front desk call her at home if we needed to speak to her. I can't thank Nanor enough for giving me peace during this very difficult time. She helped ease the burden my mother felt in having to decide the direction of my grandfather's care. I feel she went above and beyond her duty. She gave my family comfort and my grandfather back his dignity. For this, I nominate Nanor.
