Susan Mikus

Susan Mikus, RN C began her career in Coney Island Hospital as a new graduate. During her twenty two years at CIH, she has worked in a variety of settings including medical, surgical, maternity, and pediatric units. Her varied clinical background has helped prepare for her role as Nursing Supervisor. Working on the night shift for nearly fifteen years and facing daily administrative problems have honed her leadership and administrative skills. Her experience enables her to mentor and transition new staff to meet the unique challenges of working night shift. In her quest to promote nursing as a profession and in order to meet future healthcare needs and challenges, Ms. Mikus continued to further her education and recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As such, she strongly encourages staff to pursue higher levels of education. As a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Advanced Life Support instructor, Susan teaches and practices safe and quality patient care. The same is true in the area of obstetrics nursing for which she is also certified. She assists nurses to also obtain their certification in this area. Ms. Mikus’ experience goes beyond the hospital environment and extends to the community. She is responsible for overseeing and guiding nursing care in the HHC Pediatric and Adult Medical Clinics in Staten Island. This interdisciplinary collaboration helps to bring quality healthcare to under represented residents of Staten Island. It is evident that customer satisfaction is a priority to Ms. Mikus. She never hesitates to do whatever is necessary to improve patients’ comfort and well being during their stay at the hospital. Her professionalism and high standards of nursing care make her an excellent candidate and recipient of the 2010 Award.
