Susan Wakefield

 I had a elderly male patient arrive by squad at shift change a little over a week ago. He attempted suicide by using a straight razor to cut both wrists. During my initial interview and assessment, the patient described a recent depression due to his impending move to an assisted living facility. He then stated what really drove him to attempt suicide was the fact he had to give up his cats, "the only ones who truly love (him)" to the Humane Society because they could not go with him. He went on to describe both cats and how they had grown very fond of him. I asked him if there was anyone I could call for him, and he stated "no." He then offered that he was they youngest of six children and had essentially spent his life caring for others, beginning with his ailing mother many years ago. Most recently, he had cared for his sister. Alzheimer's had worsened her condition and she was moved by her family to a facility. He was never married and had no children, which brought us back to the cats. He reitterated his enormous sense of loss.

At this point in the story, I gave Susan Wakefield report. I explained the situation and plan for care. Shortly after Susan assumed care, a neighbor arrived with the wonderful news that the patient could take his cats with him to his new assisted living. If you don't have kleenex already, you should grab a box. Susan called a member of her own family who has close ties with the Nebraska Humane Society. She found that the cats were due to be picked up the next morning by their new adoptive families. Susan and her family member were able to arrange that the cats be returned to the patient. The patient did require an overnight stay, but with the help of his neighbor, Susan and her family member, he was reunited the next day with his beloved cats!

I just wanted to thank Susan for taking the initiave to treat all aspects of her patient's needs, even though it was really above and beyond. I know she doesn't think this is anything out of the ordinary, which just emphasizes what a wonderful nurse she is.
