On 8/18/10, the social worker was so worried about a situation. A mom of ours had twins. One twin came to the unit and the other was a fetal demise. A graveside service was to be held on Sunday, 8/22/10 and the grandfather of the baby was going to need to pick the baby up from the morgue. Usually our social workers or charge nurses will prepare our babies that died in our unit. The social worker was off on Sunday and this baby never even came to the unit. On Friday, 8/20/10, this nurse just happened to be in my office as the social worker and I were discussing this situation. We still didn't know who would be willing to clean and dress the baby for the grandfather to pick up. Without asking, this nurse stepped in and said "I'll do it" without any hesitation. She said this mom has lost a baby and I don't mind doing this for her. So on Sunday, she went to the morgue so the grandfather didn't have to. She dressed the baby and prepared him for the graveside service. She demonstrated an above and beyond level of compassion for this family. She demonstrated extraordinary customer service, teamwork and integrity. She is a role model for our unit and exemplifies the kind of nurse we should all strive to be.
