Todd Canning, RN

Administrative Director, MetroPlus Health Plan

New York, New York

Todd Canning, Administrative Director, HIV Services at MetroPlus Health Plan, assumed the position in September 2008 having served as a Nurse Case Manager in the same department for two years. Prior to joining MetroPlus, Todd was Assistant Director of Nursing in the Leicht Clinic at Gouverneur. In his long nursing career, Todd was also a Health Services Coordinator at Bailey House and a Health Education Manager at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Todd began his nursing work in New York City as a Staff Nurse at Housing Works and a Public Health Nurse at NYC DOH.

Todd approaches his work with logic, tenacity, dedication, professionalism and, above all, caring for the members living with HIV. He feels privileged to serve those with HIV and their providers for whom he has deep admiration. As Nurse Administrator of the largest HIV Medicaid Special Needs Plan in the country, Todd has worked tirelessly with both MetroPlus and facility-based case managers to ensure that members receive the coordinated care they need to achieve optimal health outcomes. Todd has tremendous attention to detail and persistence in researching issues until a satisfactory resolution has been achieved. Whenever he is presented with a question, he will, with remarkable speed, provide the digested results of an extensive review (often on very obscure topics) and feedback from colleagues at MetroPlus and others that he has contacted to consult on the matter. As a Nurse Administrator, Todd has tremendous enthusiasm for the clinical care of our members. His questions are probing and facilitate a discussion that informs the entire team of nurses, doctors, social workers, health educators and care management associates. He continues to personally intervene to assist members in need. Administratively, Todd has worked assiduously to make optimal use of programs and systems to ensure the effectiveness of the MetroPlus/HHC HIV Special Needs Program and to improve the quality of care members receive for a healthier tomorrow.

Todd possesses all the characteristics of a great nurse: curiosity, compassion, persistence, desire to educate and disseminate knowledge, ability to mentor his colleagues, enthusiasm that keeps his work fresh and interesting, and the ability to recognize the teachable moment and topic. It is the mark of first rate nurse who can observe and effectively report his or her experience to inform his/her colleagues. Todd recognizes this and has demonstrated the skills and ability to achieve the high standards of nursing practice and professionalism he exhibits on a daily basis on behalf of MetroPlus members living with HIV.
