Bernetter Williford

I would like to nominate Bernetter Williford, RCWI, Mother/Baby/GYN for the DAISY Award.  On June 22, 2011, there was a patient on the floor that needed emergent surgery.  The patient was young and very frightened.  The surgeon and anesthesiologist had talked to her about the need for surgery and the risks involved if she did not agree to surgery but she was still very scared and afraid to sign the consent.  Her family members were encouraging her to sign the consent and proceed, but she was overwhelmed and sobbing.  Bernetter stepped into the room and took control of the situation.  She was very professional and polite, but she was able to get the family to calm down, and gave the young girl a moment to relax.  She asked the girl to tell her specifically what it was the she was afraid of.  After the patient had a chance to speak and voice her concerns, Bernetter answered each concern with information that the patient understood and could comprehend.  After a few minutes of Bernetter’s calming presence, the young lady signed the consent, and we took her down to surgery.

This is not the first time that Bernetter has shown great leadership skills, and the ability to assess a situation.  I have worked with her for many years; she is well organized and very effective in a high stress environment.

Bernetter’s intervention on that day helped that young lady go into surgery a little less anxious, and less frightened.  I was glad that she was there and made it all go a little smoother.
