Gina Rowand

My daughter stayed at Dayton Children's in March. Although all of the nurses were fine I wish Gina had been our nurse the entire stay! She was very sensitive, gentle and compassionate with my daughter. She felt safe and comfortable with Gina. As a parent that is the best scenario we can hope for when our child is being hospitalized. Specifically when it came to my daughter's IV. She is only 4 and although this is her third stay at Dayton Children's she is very nervous about many of the procedures and was especially sensitive about her "IV hand". She had tried very hard to protect it and keep it hidden. She kept her blanket over it at all times and didn't take kindly at allowing anyone to access it.

Nurse Gina tried very hard to communicate directly with my daughter in words that a 4 year old understands. She put herself on my daughter’s level and talked directly to her and explained everything she was doing. My daughter trusted Gina and allowed her to look at her hand and treat it. Her hand had started to swell from the fluid infiltration. Gina took great care in treating her hand and IV site.

She took great care in following up with the doctor on several issues including our discharge paperwork, prescriptions and after care questions. She was a great advocate for my daughter’s release. The attending had stated around 9 a.m. that day that we would be released. I understand that it takes time but around 2:00 pm the discharge orders still had not been sent. Nurse Gina followed up with the Attending by paging him and asking about our release. He immediately sent the discharge orders!

She answered all of our questions and if she didn't know the answer she made sure she found out as quickly as possible for us. I can't thank her enough. Her dedication and love of the children shines through! Thank you Gina!
