Janet Renee McHone, RN

Labor & Delivery

Miami Valley Hospital

Dayton, Ohio

Janet Renee is an incredible nurse and makes an extraordinary difference in each and every one of her patients’ lives.  Her compassion and dedication to her patients is beyond measure.  Here is one example of her extraordinary care.

Janet Renee had a difficult patient who had been reported to be violent and agitated.  She took the time to look into the patient’s history and found there was a possible history of abuse between the family and the patient.  She spent an incredible amount of time with the patient in the morning attempting to comfort her and provide a calm and reassuring presence.  When the patient’s daughter arrived she became increasingly agitated and violent towards her daughter.  Instead of restraining the patient and snowing her with medications, Janet Renee assessed the situation and acted in a completely different and very compassionate way.  Noting the agitation had gotten worse since the family arrived, Janet Renee asked the daughter to leave.  She sat with the patient, held her hand and told her everything was okay and she would be safe here.  When Janet Renee attempted to leave the room she noted the patient’s agitation began to increase again.  She spoke to the doctor and was able to get an order for a sitter, or a staff member to stay with the patient to avoid the use of restraints for a patient who simply needed some calm reassurance and someone by her side. The sitter was not available right away so Janet Renee took it upon herself and stayed with the patient for two hours so the patient would feel at ease and comfortable.  She spent time talking to the patient, finding TV shows she liked and just providing a safe environment so her patient could feel comfortable.

After Janet Renee’s intervention the patient was calm and restful with no more periods of the extreme agitation.  This patient was able to get the needed testing completed as long as Janet Renee was there to hold her hand and provide calm reassurance that everything was alright.

Janet Renee showed compassion with this patient and prevented the patient from being categorized as “violent” or “uncooperative”.  She also prevented the unnecessary use of restraints which would have made the patient feel more at risk and unsafe.  She provided calm reassurance and helped her patient trust and feel safe and secure.   Janet Renee’s intervention was noted by many as amazing and well above and beyond the call of duty.  She deserves recognition for her kind, compassionate care that made an extraordinary difference for her patient.
