Jill Carruth, RNC-OB, BSN

Fetal Health Center

Children's Mercy Hospital

Kansas City, MO

Jill is the most caring nurse for our patients. She has to deal with expectant mothers who know their babies have severe problems. She makes sure they all have follow-up appointments and patients can reach her anytime for questions.

Jill has gone above and beyond the call of duty in her role as Perinatal Nurse Coordinator. In less than six months in her role, Jill has made herself invaluable to the Fetal Health Center team. When families come back to visit with their babies, we are often met with "is Jill here today?"

We have a patient who frequently visits the Fetal Health Center for a fetal anomaly. This patient is a surrogate, with the "intended parents" living in out of state. The patient had a few unanticipated hospitalizations for her pregnancy and Jill seamlessly communicated with this family to discuss the plan of care. Now Jill speaks with the family multiple times per week and is so nurturing and reassuring. I have never seen someone singlehandedly manage high emotions and sensitivity with such grace and ease. Jill not only cares for this patient from a medical standpoint, she supports this mother by easing the burden by explaining medical situations to the family. In our shared office, I often witness Jill's caring attitude with the family and I am amazed at her grace in handling a potentially complicated situation.

I cannot imagine where we would be without Jill. Her care of patients as a whole, her wonderful organizational skills, her love for the job, and her fabulous communication skills are second to none!

Jill always shows the qualities described in the DAISY Award. She has to deal with stressed “moms-to-be” all day. She makes sure they have the information they need, the appointments they need, and even walks them to the next department they need to visit. She is always caring and attentive to her patients. She explains exams needed, draws blood, makes sure labs get in, and reports are returned. She is AWESOME!
