Lucy O'Hanlon

“Please accept this letter as our nomination of Lucy O’Hanlon for the DAISY Award. This nomination letter is submitted by the Z family and the M family, 2 sets of parents, each with quadruplets. We have gotten together weekly after the birth of our quadruplets boys and often talk about our great experience in the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. We knew we had to submit a DAISY award nomination after Lucy’s name kept coming up in our memories.
We were amazed at the knowledge and care shown by all of the nurses in this department. They were fantastic and made our experience so much easier. The fact that Lucy stands out among these nurses shows how truly special she is. We will never forget her compassion and the love that we felt her give our family from the first day we met her. She is the most dedicated nurse we have ever met and we truly feel blessed beyond belief that God crossed our paths with Lucy. Her gentle voice and tender touch soothed us all instantly and we immediately knew we were right where we needed to be. We could rest assured knowing our children were in her loving care. She was always there to listen and reassure us that our fragile miracles didn’t know they were so small and I believe she was almost as excited as we were the first time she helped us with Kangaroo Care. She made it such a special experience. Our son C’s PDA hadn’t closed when he was born. This was a completely new experience for us and we didn’t know what to expect. Lucy took the time to explain what needed to be done and what we should expect. C received a PIC line and during this procedure, I was very upset and worried. After the procedure was over, Lucy placed him in my arms and I began to cry. My husband looked up and noticed that Lucy had tears in her eyes as well. We were touched at how much she cared for our little guys after knowing them for a short amount of time. We knew right then that they were in the right hands. She not only cared for our children, but for us as well. After delivering the babies, I was groggy and wasn’t feeling well but wanted to be with our boys. She did everything she could to make sure I was as comfortable as possible.
When you have children in the hospital, you begin to feel like someone else is taking care of your child. Lucy helped up feel so comfortable and made this feeling so much easier. She made us feel so welcome and helped us become as involved as we possibly could. She was the first nurse to help us with Kangaroo Care and to help with their baths. Lucy made sure our cameras were right there so we didn’t miss any of those special memories. Mrs. M says she often wishes she could go back and name her daughter Lucy after such a sweet, strong, loving, caring person and care taker. This proves how much of an impact Lucy has had in all of our lives. When we would thank her, she would say “You’re welcome, but this is how you and your babies should be treated.” This proves how much pride Lucy has in her job.
Our lives have forever been enriched by Lucy. We hope that you find her deserving of this award and also let her know how special she is to us and how much of an impact she had in making our experience so much more special. This was a very special time in all our lives and Lucy is a major part of it.”
