Margaret Hughes, RN

Mother/Baby Unit

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center

Chicago, Illinois

Margaret dealt with a very difficult situation where a baby who was discharged home required further medical attention and care.  Because of her vigilance, clear clinical assessment, and her dedication to providing excellent patient care, the patient received the appropriate medical attention and intervention.  In this situation, this required multiple subspecialists to be consulted, imaging evaluation, and then transfer of the baby to CMH for emergent surgical procedure.

This patient received the appropriate care due to Margaret’s persistence and clear clinical judgment.  She is a true advocate for her patients, and sets a great example for all of us!

Margaret used her excellent nursing skills to identify a baby with a hard testicle.  She notified the primary doctor which led to a neonatology consult.  She collaborated with the hospitalist as well which confirmed her assessment.  This led to the newborn being transferred to Children's Memorial Hospital on the same day as well as the newborn receiving surgery to save the testicle.  Kudos to Margaret!
