Capt. Paul Hamel, RN

ICU

Brooke Army Medical Center

San Antonio, Texas

Col. Belinda Spencer, Chief of CCU with Capt. Paul and Mrs. Hamel

CPT Hamel demonstrated excellence in clinical knowledge and decision making while caring for an intubated patient on 3N Combined Intensive Care Unit.  Despite the initial x-ray showing an in place ET tube, CPT Hamel persisted in conveying his concern for the ET tube being displaced.  Following further re-evaluation by the ICU team, the ET tube was reinserted.

CPT Hamel’s clinical expertise, rapid action and persistence in “something” not being right with his patient resulted in a positive outcome.  CPT Hamel’s efforts are an example of the overall competency, caring, compassion and responsiveness displayed to SAMMC/BAMC patients every day.  CPT Hamel truly represents that “extraordinary nurse” worthy of the DAISY award.

(l-r) Jane Kamstra, RN, MSN, CNOR, DAISY Foundation Board Member; Capt. Paul Hamel; and Capt. Frederic Rawlins, Resident.
