...I received notification that a nurse on my unit had a very challenging night. A young patient died. Death occurs daily in our hospital but this patient affected many of my staff, he chose his day to die.

With family at his bedside to support him this patient was going to die. My staff nurse, Brett, had many ethical questions to ponder and resolve both for himself, for the patient, for the patient's family and even his fellow peers. The reason Brett deserves special recognition is because he is a new grad. He showed compassion, empathy, knowledge and remained calm in a very tense and sad moment. When he felt he needed assistance the CNC and Administrative Manager came to his aid. In the end the patient died, the family grieved. Brett gave his all to complete his charting, care for his other patients and above all remained cool and calm, externally if not internally.

Brett asked all the correct questions and continues to grow and learn every day from every experience. He returned the following night with a smile on his face but with a stain on his heart. He clearly shows his goal to provide extraordinary care to his patients and their families.

I highly recommend Brett Krell, RN, receive The DAISY Award for his compassionate care of a patient and his family at the worst time of their lives.
