Christy Petyak
Nomination by another nurse on the Heart and Kidney Unit: Christy is very deserving of the DAISY Award. Her compassionate care to a terminal patient and the patient’s mother proved her to be an extraordinary nurse. Christy took the time to learn all of the patient’s wound care, tracheostomy care, line care, medications, and more. She came in on her off days and stayed late to provide the care she felt the patient deserved. She took the time to talk and explain everything to the patient even though she was non-responsive and to the mother. Christy was empathic and patient with the mother during this difficult time. Christy spent the extra time needed to explain the care and to understand her daughter….as a person, not just as a patient or a task. The mother often referred to Christy as her favorite ‘nerdy’ nurse because she was so involved and educated about the care her daughter required. Christy is loved and appreciated by all of her patients, their families, and by her coworkers. She is a wonderful resource to novice and experienced nurses. I can think of no other nurse who deserves the DAISY Award more. |
