Eleanor Tomas, RN, BSN

Med/Psych

UCLA Health System, Los Angeles, California

Eleanor was nominated by a team of her peers.  All were moved to nominate Eleanor because of the concern she displays for each person she comes into contact with, her tremendous compassion, her generosity, and the spirit of devotion she brings to her surroundings.  She is truly an asset to all of those with whom she works.

“I would like to nominate Ms. Eleanor Tomas, RN for the DAISY award.  I have been working on this unit for just shy a year and Eleanor has been one of my supervisors/charge nurse from the first day I arrived.

I feel that she should be acknowledged for all of the hard work and dedication she has not just for our unit but for each individual patient, family member and friend who visits us.

Eleanor to me is the perfect example of what an extraordinary nurse is.  Every single day she goes above and beyond the call to ensure that all of our patients receive the best care possible on a personal level.  She is compassionate, understanding, patient, and always kind.  Even when dealing with the most challenging patients she does it all with a smile.  She never hesitates to stop and listen to the fears and concerns of a worried family member no matter how simple the questions may be.  She is there when family members need someone to listen to them vent about their frustrations, or just to offer a simple reassurance that their loved on is in good hands, and even give a simple hug to help ease the stress that comes with having a loved one admitted to the hospital.

In addition she is and always has been someone that many of our staff members including myself can go to for assistance in any situation regarding patient care.  When our census is full and it seems the other RNs are overwhelmed she will assist them in any way including passing their medications, receiving report on their new admission, taking off physicians orders for their patients and even helping with admissions, discharges and transfers in its entirety if necessary.  Eleanor literally helps with every single thing on the unit.  From preparing the rooms for a new admission, making out the staff assignments for the majority of the week, feeding patients, assisting in potentially violent patient situations, ironing out any issues among staff members, helping a family member feel more confident/secure in their decision to leave their loved ones at our hospital, and so much more.

One thing I wanted to be sure to point out is how many times I have seen Eleanor talking with and obviously overwhelmed husband, wife, son or daughter and they are crying or on the brink of tears because they are afraid of leaving their loved one alone, she hugs them and tells them, “Please go home and get some rest because if you don’t take care of yourself now you wont be able to take car of your love one when the time comes.  They need you to take care of yourself.”  I have seen the look on their faces when says that and it seems that then they know their loved one is in the best place possible and they can go home and feel a little better because of her words.

I know it may seem like I am embellishing the truth but it is all true.  Eleanor is an amazing woman and she excels at what she does.  She puts her heart into her work and the patients and it shows every day.  We are so very lucky to have someone like her be a part our team and I only hope that she can finally be recognized and acknowledged for the extraordinary nursing she exhibits here.

She deserves a million roses but this DAISY will do just fine!  Thank you for your consideration.”
