Patricia Henley, RN

ER, Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Capital District Health Authority

Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

Patti's nomination reads:

I was speaking with Sheila MacDonald yesterday, and she tells me what an awesome job you did in managing this very difficult Infection Control situation.  I understand you were in the middle of some other serious injuries at the time and despite the business, you critically thought thru the processes and care of the patient. In addition, you had to make many phone calls to various other health care agencies: Quarantine Officer, Public Health, Infection Control and the Infectious Diseases Specialist.  With you being the only ER nurse, I can appreciate how chaotic it was for you. These situations require this level of interaction and you demonstrated your leadership, knowledge, courage, advocacy, and critically thinking. I wasn’t working on Sunday, but I am told you were strongly compassionate for this health care concern. You had to rise above to do the right thing.

This patient came off a ship from Africa, in the middle of Sheet Harbor with a questionable communicable disease. This ship had stopped in many other countries before arriving in Canada. I understand there were many communication difficulties you had with your physician and you had to advocate strongly for doing the “right thing” for your patient and community. You were compassionate to the safety of the community, and to this patient, who was so far from home.

Patti, great job!  You consistently raise the bar of excellence in nursing practice and you make us all very proud to be nurses.
