We had a very nice 60 year old homeless gentleman present to the ED on Saturday night after he was riding his bike and was struck by a hit and run driver.  His injuries were minor and he was eventually d/c’d.  Unfortunately his bicycle that was his primary source of transportation was destroyed and he did not have any way of getting around town.  Tammy was his nurse and recognized that this became a major stressor for him.  On her scheduled break she went home, retrieved her bicycle (only a few years old), returned to the ED and gave it to him along with a bike lock that she had.  He was obviously taken aback by the random act of kindness, and with a tear in his eyes he thanked her and graciously accepted her generous gift.

She did not want me to tell this story to anyone, but I had fingers crossed when I told her that I wouldn’t.  I am very proud to be a part of this ED team!
