Vic made arrangements for a wife to visit her critically ill husband in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). On the surface, this procedure seems routine to a critical care nurse, unless the wife is also a patient. Then the undertaking becomes more challenging. Not for Vic. He collaborated with nursing colleagues on 6 West to bring this couple together, which turned out to be for the last time. Unfortunately, the husband died two hours after this couple's time together.

Vic was selected to receive this honor for emulating the following DAISY attributes:

Arranging for a special connection time for-husband and wife

Advocating for patients and their families

Collaborating with the healthcare team to meet patient/family member's needs

Going above and beyond the call of duty

Providing individualized compassionate care

Striving to achieve excellence.

We recognize Vic today, for making the ultimate difference to a compromised family member who needed someone to make decisions and arrangements for them in their time of need. In the words of the Director of ICU, who was deeply moved by this extraordinary act of compassion, "Vic's actions allowed this wife to say her final good-bye."

Vic joined the VPH family in November of 2012 as a night shift nurse. He was a general surgeon in the Philippines. He recently graduated from a Nurse Practitioner program in California. Vic was recognized by his colleague as one who readily offers his clinical expertise to the team, especially new staff members. Peers describe Vic as a calm and helpful practitioner who maintains a relaxed demeanor, irrespective of the situation. He is a strong clinical nurse resource able to care for any patient who rolls through the doors. Vic is kind, dependable, and never has a cross word for anyone. His smile is contagious. We are so fortunate to have Vic on the VPH team.
