Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is The DAISY Faculty Award?
A: The purpose of this program is to provide a national recognition program that colleges/schools of nursing may use to demonstrate appreciation to teachers for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students. The Foundation hopes that, in some way, this program will contribute to a positive work environment and encourage them to continue teaching. In creating The DAISY Faculty Award, there were three elements we wanted to ensure our recognition program included:
A partnership with schools to provide on-going recognition
Flexibility so that The DAISY Faculty Award may be tailored to each school’s unique culture and values
A turn-key program, with The DAISY Foundation providing most everything you need to implement The DAISY Faculty Award
Q: Why did The DAISY Foundation start a recognition program for nursing faculty?
A: Teaching nursing is increasingly challenging as teachers’ roles and responsibilities have increased in recent years. In addition to teaching, they are required to maintain their own clinical expertise and often practice nursing in clinical settings, caring for the most ill of patients.
Despite the many pressures on faculty, they have a profound impact on the future practice patterns of their students. Many students talk about hearing an instructor’s voice in the back of their heads even years after they have graduated. However, these dedicated faculty often do not receive appropriate recognition for the effect they have, in the long-run, on their students, on patient care, and on the professionalism of nursing.
Therefore, The DAISY Foundation, as part of its service to the nursing profession’s role in patient care, established The DAISY Faculty Award. The purpose of this program is to provide a national recognition program that colleges/schools of nursing may use to demonstrate appreciation to faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students. The Foundation hopes that, in some way, this program will contribute to a positive work environment and encourage them to continue teaching.
Q. What is meant by “on-going recognition?”
A: The work of nursing faculty goes on all year long in classrooms and in clinical settings. Depending on the size of your faculty, we encourage you to ensure that faculty members feel appreciated all year long by presenting DAISY Faculty Awards during the year. The impact of The DAISY Faculty Award is greatest on faculty who actually experience a DAISY presentation. So the more Awards you can present, the greater benefit to your faculty.
Additionally, you may decide to choose an honoree from each specialty, from among your part-time/full-time/adjunct faculty members, etc.
Q: When should we present DAISY Faculty Awards?
A: Please consider honoring your Faculty at each graduation, pinning ceremony, convocation, faculty retreat/planning meeting, and other events. You might even surprise a faculty member during a class or at a hospital in front of her/his students.
Q: What is the cost for The DAISY Faculty Award?
A: The nominal cost of the program is based on the number of awards you present each year. Please contact us for a specific proposal.
Q. How is a faculty member chosen to receive The DAISY Faculty Award?
A: A DAISY Faculty Award is given based on criteria you establish in alignment with your school’s values. (We are happy to share criteria by schools of nursing participating in the program now.) All we ask is that The DAISY Faculty Award be a merit-based award that honors not only great teaching skill and leadership but also a commitment to instilling strong patient care and compassion in their students.
Faculty may be nominated by anyone who comes in contact with them. In the academic setting: peers, students, administrative staff. In the clinical setting: nurses, patients, physicians, nurse managers, staff, etc.
Q: What does a nurse who wins The DAISY Faculty Award receive?
A. Honorees will be nominated by their students, peers, school administrators, and clinical staff in the hospitals where faculty have students to receive:
- The DAISY Faculty Award Certificate, presented in a handsome portfolio and signed by the school’s Dean
- A DAISY Faculty Award pin
- A unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled "A Healer's Touch." Click here for more information about these beautiful works of art.

Upon committing to the program, you will receive a DAISY Faculty
Award Welcome Kit to guide your implementation of the program. It includes a detailed outline on how to present the Award to make it most meaningful for your faculty and others attending the presentations.
Q. Who generally coordinates the program at the school?
A: Please designate a coordinator as DAISY's key contact who will manage the award and assure the process. The coordinator usually works with a committee who establishes the criteria and selects DAISY Faculty Awardees from among the nominees. We will do everything we can to assist the coordinator(s) for the program.
