Abigail is an RN in the ED. An ED nurse requires a very special heart. A consoling heart that can empathize with someone who just lost a loved one, a comforting heart that can care for a frightened sick child with anxious parents, and an enduring heart that can manage the most complicated of circumstances. Abigail has all of these qualities which are demonstrated all day, every day. For these reasons and many more, she is a DAISY Nurse.

Abigail cares. She receives many, many praises from patients, family members, physicians, and her peers. She is recognized for consistently going above and beyond her call of duty. Nursing home administrators have said she is extremely thorough. One nursing home administrator said she never had a ED nurse call her before, mainly she thought it was because the ED is so crazy busy. However, she was caring for their patient who was in a complicated situation. The ED was extremely busy and she had 3 other patients, but never gave the impression she was in a hurry. In fact, it seemed like as if this was her only patient and she was advocating for her!

Another story that displays her compassion for others was shared by a peer that happened to walk by a patient room to witness her sitting at the bedside holding an elderly patient's hand. This patient has dementia. He was alone and waiting to be transported back to his nursing facility. She checked on him frequently to ensure his safety. This patient was afraid and stated to her, "Please don't leave me alone". Abigail replied, "If I hold your hand will you be ok?". The patient replied "yes". She sat by the bedside holding his hand until the ambulance arrived to take him home. She shared that even though this patient dozed off while holding her hand, his hand grip on hers remained tight.

Abigail is passionate about nursing and is an excellent teacher. She's been preceptor to many nurses, new grads to experienced, and never complains. When new employees are asked if they want to acknowledge a staff member who has helped them the most, she is often mentioned as one who has a big heart and desire to help others succeed. Abigail cares about the department. She steps up without hesitation to assist with whatever needs to be done, such as supervising with annual accu-check and pregnancy point of care testing.

Extraordinary in so many ways, Abigail's contribution to nursing is recognized and admired by so many. We are very fortunate to have her in our lives.
