Alesha was working in the MRI department at Stony Point verifying the weekend schedule when she identified a potential concern. Upon review of the schedule she realized an upcoming patient had a history of esophageal cancer and a tracheostomy - which could be an issue since her department did not have the equipment to support the patient's needs. After identifying this potential problem she called the patient's home to discuss the patient's needs and determine the best option for moving forward.
During this call Alesha spoke with the wife of the patient and discovered that he was currently hospitalized - and was transitioning to hospice care. The patients' wife was grieving and told Alesha that she was having problems "letting go." Alesha, recognizing the importance of relationship-based care, listened quietly for over 30 minutes and allowed the wife to reminisce and work through her emotions.
This is just one example of the care that Alesha provides. She has improved practice in her area in many ways. She identified better noise-blocking earplugs for patients in the MRI machine and also made some suggestions for changes to the MRI checklist to assure that patients with diabetes and on dialysis received appropriate care. Even more amazing was her attention to detail when noticing the wiring inside a prostate coil was rusted. She didn't hesitate to call the manufacturer.
Being in an MRI department where access is limited because the door is locked, it's hard for people to understand the good work that goes on behind our closed doors. Alesha is definitely a DAISY nurse who could have easily gone unnoticed! Thanks for all you do!
