Amanda was the nurse on duty during my mom's last night. I was worn out from the suddenness and extreme ups and downs of Mom's decline. I had no understanding or appreciation of the comfort giving effects of morphine for the suffering the person experiences when they can't get oxygen. Amanda patiently and gently explained the philosophy, if you will, behind the use of morphine to ease that suffering. At the same time, we were witnessing the labored, agitated state of mind my mom was in and wanting to alleviate the pain. She still respected it as my decision and waited patiently for me to understand the difference between comfort care and euthanasia. You can tell it wasn't a light topic. Bless her! Then as my mom struggled, she spoke directly to Mom, telling her to let go gently stroking her hair. It was a picture I'll never forget: a beautiful, young woman softly, gently ushering an old, reluctant-to-let-go fighter on her way. It was beautiful, it freed me to grieve, and it blessed my mom. Thankyou Amanda.
