An extremely agitated patient with autism came into the ED via EMS. The patient had been medicated in the ambulance. When placed in the room the patient was pacing, hitting herself in the leg, smashing her head on the wall, sitting on the floor smashing her head on the wall or sitting on the floor smashing her head on the floor.
Amanda Wong stepped in, sat wherever the patient was at and held her hands. Medication was given in the ED and the patient was moved to a safer room. Amanda remained at the bedside talking in such soothing tones. She sang a myriad of nursery rhymes and remained there for the duration of the patient's stay. We were able to discharge the patient home very shortly after her presentation.
Amanda's caring and compassion for this (and every) patient were palpable. She was a calm force for the patient. She was a calm energy for the staff. This incident swelled my heart with pride to be a part of a team Amanda is on. We could all learn from you!
