Amy Sorensen went above and beyond in advocating for a patient who lost his wife in a car accident. The gentleman's wife was flown to St. Mary's after a motor vehicle crash and expired 30 minutes prior to her husband's arrival. The family asked us to allow them to tell the husband that his wife had passed. The husband asked if he could view her body, but was told that this was not possible since she had already been taken to the morgue and because of the extent of his injuries. Amy took over his care on the night shift. It did not sit well with her that the husband was told that he would not be able to view his wife until the mortuary, especially since he would probably be in the hospital for quite some time with his injuries. Amy involved spiritual care and security to arrange for the husband to see his wife. The staff took the husband in his bed on a monitor to see his wife and cleaned her up so that she was presentable for him to see. They pushed his bed next to hers and gave the two alone time. The patient expressed his thanks and was very grateful that he was able to say his goodbyes. Amy fought for his patient to be able to see his wife. She spent several hours on the phone coordinating this, while also taking care of her trauma patients. Amy is a true DAISY Nurse.
