Andrew “Blair" Cowan works in the Telemetry III unit. Here is what the patient’s family member who nominated Blair had to say:

I wanted to make you aware of a not so good situation that happened in my family that caused us to pay your Hospital a visit.

On Monday, my Grandmother was admitted through the ER to your facility for a broken hip. On Tuesday, she underwent surgery and was admitted to the Telemetry Unit. She is the Matriarch of our family and this situation has been very emotional and heart wrenching to our entire family. My Grandmother is a small woman with a huge heart. She is the Mother of 15 children, has 68 Grandchildren, 52 Great Grandchildren, and 11 Great, Great Grandchildren. She is the glue that keeps our family together and we all feel she deserves the best. While she was in your care, she got the absolute best!!

She had a Nurse by the name of Blair Cowan. I have to tell you, working in an Exempla facility myself; I have worked with and come across a lot of Nurses. But hands down, without a doubt, this man was the best Nurse I have ever had an encounter with. He was so loving, and gentle and understanding. He was informative, and attentive not just to my Grandmother, but to us. He went way above what was expected. He went out of his way to care for my Grandmother, but also made sure that the family was involved and informed. My cousin and I stayed for 3 nights with my Grandmother on Tele, and watching this man work was an honor. And having him care for someone that means so much to us made us feel blessed. You can tell he loves his job, and you can see the genuine concern for his patients in his eyes. He listened to our concerns, and gave honest feedback. He answered every question we could have, and made us feel safe that my Grandmother was in his care. It takes dedication and insight into the whole process from both sides, to contribute in so many aspects of a situation like this.

I would like to nominate Blair for the DAISY Award. He deserves it and so much more. Everyone on that Telemetry floor was good. There is so much more to Nursing than just being professional. Being educated is a good thing, but compassion is something that has to come from the heart. When you are able to find the balance between being professional, and personable, that is truly the best gift ever to share with those you care for....because the patients’ lives, aren’t the only lives you touch.

We want to thank Blair, from the bottom of our hearts for the extraordinary care that he provided to my Grandmother. He is an amazing Nurse, and your Hospital should be honored to have him employed there!
