Good nursing care encompasses so much more than just physically tending to the patient. From working with the family’s emotional needs to coordinating care after they leave the hospital, an extraordinary nurse helps with every part of a patient’s healing process.
Anne Pennell of the Transitional Care Unit at Cardinal Glennon received the April DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for her exceptional care with a patient from out of the country.
“Anne worked tirelessly to help coordinate this patient’s care not only between caregivers here but also between caregivers here and in Canada,” said coworker Joe Diekemper, who nominated Pennell. “She demonstrated compassion and critical thinking by proposing a list of home health supplies the family would need in Canada.”
Pennell actively sought out solutions to ensure a smooth transition out of the United States and back home.
“She took a leadership role holding conference calls with the Canadian caregivers and loading and packing the patient’s belongings for discharge,” Diekemper said.
“Anne demonstrated exceptional nursing care and great compassion.”
