The Post Anesthesia Care area is a department where patients often do not remember their nurses due to the medications they have received for their surgical procedures. And although family members do have a short visit with their loved one, the amount of time the family spends in the department does not encourage relationships to be formed between the staff and families. For these reasons, I am always happy when patients or families remember a staff member of the PACU and take the time to acknowledge their care.

During the last 3 months Asgedet Fessehatzion has been recognized numerous times in Above and Beyonds as well as being named positively several times in the Inpatient Press Ganey comments. This is a strong testament to the exceptional care she delivers to her patients each day.

One instance describes the patient's experience after arriving in the PACU in excruciating pain. The patient goes on to say how Seggie spoke calmly to her and told her not to worry, she would help her through. After helping her through her difficult time, Seggie continued to be attentive to her needs while giving assistance to others in the same way. Another instance describes how very safe she felt under Seggie's attentive care. This patient stated "The hospital is a better place because she is here!" Further comments come from a family that appreciated the exceptional and knowledgeable bedside care that was given to a mother. The family appreciated her professional, courteous and friendly interaction with the family.. They described her care of their mother and interactions with them as the best of UPMC.

Seggie's caring and kind behavior does not stop at the patients. She takes the time to speak with transporters, houskeepers and dietary. She takes special time to welcome other cultures as she herself came to the United States as a teenager and knows fristhand how it feels to be in a new culture.
