I believe Aubrey exemplifies the qualities of an excellent, professional nurse who cares for her patients by viewing them as a whole person and taking their personal preferences as well as anxieties and fears into account when planning their care. She is a valued member of our CCU team and well respected by her colleagues. When she is caring for a patient with whom she forms a strong nurse-patient relationship, she makes sure to communicate the plan with her colleagues so that the patient received seamless care.
A perfect example of this was at Christmas 2018. We were caring for a young patient, B, in the CCU who has spent most of the last year in the hospital prior to and after receiving a heart transplant. As his organ failure progressed it became more and more difficult for the care team to balance his wishes for curative therapy with pain and symptom management. In the midst of these conversations, Aubrey spent a lot of time getting to know B so that she could gain his trust and figure out how to prioritize her care so that he received the interventions he needed but be as comfortable as possible. Aubrey created a tip sheet about the patient's medication regimen and preferences for nurses to use during handoff to ease the patient's anxiety. She found some spare Christmas decorations and decked out his room. I cannot overstate how valuable Aubrey's care and support of B and her colleagues were in providing him with a comfortable, dignified death. She is a true DAISY Nurse for her constant personalized care and advocacy of our CCU patients.
