Barbara is a case manager whose critical role in patient care is not often recognized. Without Barbara, our floor would be in gridlock. Our clientele is often unfunded with little hope of success without assistance. Barbara comes in every day with a mission to help those less fortunate individuals find suitable means for healthcare after discharge. Barbara begins the arduous process of understanding the diagnosis and making recommendations based upon the medical course of the patient. She is an expert resource of both knowledge and experience for the nurses and physicians on our unit. She has been the facilitator of multidisciplinary rounds and without her vigilance, the rounds would never have been as successful as they have been at closing the loop between the nurses, doctors, and patients on the unit. She painstakingly pursues discharge accommodations, ranging from rehabilitation centers to skilled nursing facilities to temporary housing. She knows every trick in the book to house, clothe and transport our patients to a successful place for life after discharge. This is the sign of an expert nurse. Moreover, Barbara's influence does not end with patient placement. She is actively involved in making our unit a better place to deliver patient care. She is crafty at finding suitable attire for patients when they leave the hospital so they are able to fit back into the community. She recognizes when her limits of ability have been reached and thenreaches out to leadership for help so that the safety and well-being of patients can be the first consideration. This is the sign of a compassionate nurse. Lastly, Barbara's influence as a resource, colleague and friend cannot be overlooked. She genuinely cares for the staff on the unit where she works. Barbara has guided young nurses through thought processes and she often points out to leadership the struggles of the nurses on the unit and ever so gently makes recommendations that will better the work environment for all. At times, she plays multiple roles such as answering phones and call bells. She can even tell a good Chuck Norris joke from time to time that will raise your spirits. This is the sign of a loving nurse. It is because Barbara Flatter is an expert, compassionate and loving nurse that makes her a true DAISY Nurse.
