I witnessed Belinda exhibit excellent leadership and problem-solving skills during a high census period.
Belinda was not working that evening and happened to be at the hospital. While stopping to say hello to the RN Supervisor on shift, she realized her co-worker needed assistance. The hospital was near capacity and there were approximately 8-10 ED holds with potentially 4-6 admissions pending.
Belinda sprang into action to assist her co-worker and effectively cleared all ED holds, helped secure call-in staff, and led the evening bed meeting at around 8:00 p.m. Additionally, she took time to help mentor her co-worker on her (Belinda's) approach to handling these types of bed capacity/throughput challenges. Altogether, Belinda spent about 6 hours of her off time helping the hospital, her colleagues, and patients.
Although Belinda was not a direct caregiver in this situation, her leadership and dedication to her team members ensured patients holding in the ED were assigned beds in a prompt manner and nursing coverage/assignments house wide were stable and well communicated.
