My name is Dennis. I am a Vietnam Veteran. In July, 2015 I made contact with the Evanston CBOC to learn what immunizations I would need to return to Vietnam, this time in peace time. I received a call from the CBOC informing me that the VA does not offer immunizations for travel. Much to my surprise, the next day I received a call from Beth Venugopal and she informed me she had been in touch with Renee Kramer at the Lovell FHCC. Beth said they would get me the necessary immunizations! They checked me for existing immunities and determined which vaccines I would need. Beth cheerfully kept me informed and up to date on my status and multiple appointments scheduling.
Beth Venugopal's commitment and dedication exemplifies Patient Centered Care. Beth represents the VA's core Values and Characteristics in her interaction with her co-workers and her patients. When I met her in person, I was impressed with her commitment to serve veterans and make their experience navigating the VA health system a smooth one. Beth took care of me! She started the process and carried it through. "We're going to do this!" she said. Beth showed an interest in my Vietnam service, my Parkinson's Disease diagnosed 4 years ago, and my 37 year career with the Evanston Police Department.
Upon leaving the Army for civilian life (I experienced the same "non-welcome home" that you have all heard about) I began my lengthy career in law enforcement for the City of Evanston, Illinois, holding every rank from police officer to interim chief at my retirement. Beth possesses the traits I looked for in my police officers: dedication, commitment, communication skills, compassion and respect.
What makes Beth unique? She didn't give up, she stayed positive and on course. I know I now have someone I can trust and reach out to at any time. I suspect Beth's treatment of me is not unique. She is committed to veterans and their families. I therefore, with enthusiasm, nominate Beth Venugopal, RN for the DAISY Award.
