Philosopher George Hegel once said, "Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion." I can honestly state, no nurse has exhibited a passion for patient care as well as Blaine. If you are working on our unit, there is no doubt that her patients are HER patients and this unit is HER family. She consistently goes above and beyond with tireless determination. She keeps a cache of patient care items in her locker that she has purchased with her own money. Her peppermint essential oils have all but eradicated nausea on our unit. I have always been skeptical of essential oils, but I cannot argue with the results and the gratitude that our patients express. Because of this, she has done the impossible: I am enjoying the soothing essence of lavender from a diffuser in my living room as I type these words.
Blaine's passion also extends to her fellow team members. She is the type of nurse who will jump in and help in any situation and holds our team together when things are melting down. If any nurse or PCA on the floor has one of "those" days, she has it right there shouldering the burden of suffering along with them. She leaves no nurse or PCA behind.
Blaine is who Florence Nightingale had in mind when she said, "I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel." She is a hero amongst the chaos of healthcare.
