I am a nurse at the VA, where we also have the DAISY Award, I know what the DAISY Award represents.
I had a son born at 37 gestational weeks in December at the Women’s Hospital. He seemed to be born healthy with no issues. Bridget Noonan was our nurse. My son started grunting, not bad, but just different than he had been. Bridget was with us frequently, checking on him. He became more lethargic. She was in the room at least every 30 minutes. She called the NNP because she said her instincts told her something was not right. When he go to the NICU, they found he was group beta strep +, which was a surprise as I was negative. His WBC was 1.4.
The neonatologist said that had he not been transferred, he would have died within a few hours. He is 6 weeks old now and fat and healthy. If it weren’t for Bridget’s instincts, he would have died in my arms. Bridget knew her job and followed her gut. She treated the patient, not by watching a machine, using her critical thinking skills.
I thank Bridget Noonan for saving my son’s life.
