Brittany Anderson, RN was caring for a friend of mine who was a patient in the ED for extreme pain. This patient was not like any other patient because his wife was in labor in the hospital L&D department. During his stay in the ED, it was determined that he would be admitted and possibly have surgery. I am a nurse here at NGHS and came to Brittany with this story. Her actions were a reflection of respectful compassion as she wanted to make sure that she did everything possible to help this family during this current crisis. She took my cell phone number and promised to keep me up to date on his condition so that I could keep his wife updated throughout her labor. Brittany also demonstrated deep interdependence as she worked with the ED physician, the surgeon, bed placement, and the receiving nurse and charge nurse to get him a bed on S1B, and not in the north tower, where he would be quite a distance from his wife. This placement allowed him to be only a few feet away from the entrance of L&D so that he could possibly be present for his baby's birth. When it came time to take him to his room, Brittany let her passion for excellence shine as she brought him to the bedside of his wife so that they could spend some quiet time together. This time was therapeutic for the patients as they needed to know that each was being cared for and were ok while enduring their own unique pain. Brittany was never in a hurry, she allowed them time while she waited at the L&D nurse's station to take him back to his room on S1B. While Brittany had other things that I am sure were pressing on her, she treated him like he was the only patient in the hospital. Later that evening, Brittany called me to check on her patient and to get an update on the impending delivery. This father was able to be present in the room for the birth of his son, because of her diligent care and compassion. Brittany demonstrated the true passion for excellence that each nurse should bring to her patients every day. She made a profound difference in the life of this family. She is deserving of this DAISY Award and can inspire other nurses to be kind, compassionate, respectful, and caring for their patients every day. Thank you, Brittany, for making a difference and inspiring me to be a better nurse.
