I cannot tell you the difference Brittany made for us in post-partum as first-time parents. Being a nurse myself, I felt like others expected me (or mostly I expected myself) to know all about this new mom gig, but as you know that is not the case. I joked with my family that OB was a ballgame of its own and that I knew just enough to be dangerous. Brittany walked my husband and me through our fears without judgment and with a great sense of humor. She made us feel comfortable in a totally foreign world and ensured the safety of our son always. When all the family had gone home, and my husband and I were left staring at our son weary and semi-afraid, she scooped up all 9 pounds 3.4 ounces of him and cuddled him right away stating "I love the big babies!" This gave us confidence that we wouldn't break him. Later, she really impressed us when he began coughing and with lightning reflexes, she had him out of his bassinet and flipped over suctioning him before we could even comprehend what was happening.
Brittany genuinely seems to enjoy her job. She spent ample time rendering care and went above and beyond to initiate conversation that allowed us to get to know each other, a true caring initiative. I gained confidence in her quickly as she talked about her family life and we related to each other through our love of travel. When I was complimenting her to another staff member, I was shocked when I was told she was relatively new to OB and maybe nursing in general (I can't remember). I was surprised as she was always very prepared when she entered our room in both knowledge and skill. She was able to answer nearly every question we had promptly and confidently but was not afraid to ask for help if needed. When others asked for her assistance, she was more than happy to, but never cut our care short.
Additionally, Brittany always had what she needed when she came into the room. This may not seem like a big deal, but to exhausted parents, the in and out of the care teams and family (while necessary) can wear you out quickly. Brittany was absolutely a highlight of our stay, we joked that because of her we would be "repeat customers". Although all staff was amazing, at one point, exhausted and overwhelmed by the dayshift hustle and bustle, my husband and I noticed the clock and sighed relief knowing Brittany would be back in just a few hours. I would love to continue my accolades for her, but naptime is almost over! I could not even leave the hospital without a photo of her and my son. To our family, she is that extraordinary. Thank you, Brittany, for your impeccable care and for making such a difference in our lives.
