Brooklyn's compassionate care exemplifies the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model. Brooklyn was assigned to care for a patient seriously ill with cancer. She had 2 children, an adult child, and an 8-year-old daughter. Brooklyn took time to talk with the 8-year-old each time she would make her rounds. They bonded during the days that her mom was here. The patient coded one night and passed away. You can only imagine how hard this was for her children, especially a young child. Brooklyn took the little girl into the staff Conference Room and comforted her for a long time. When the child felt ready, Brooklyn accompanied the child into the room and stayed with her at the bedside. The little girl voiced that she was very worried about getting ready for school and who would take her shopping for school supplies since Mom had died. Brooklyn gave the girl her phone number and told her she would help her. 3C staff was so touched by this child, that they collected money to assist in purchasing needed supplies. Brooklyn, with permission from the family, took the child shopping for school clothes, supplies and to a movie on her days off. This is a wonderful example of the power of being there for someone in need. Brooklyn went above and beyond in showing mercy and compassion to this child.
