I was a patient in 3-17F, the surgical oncology unit. I, hereby, would like to give my gratitude to a nurse named Cao Yijia in that unit.
This event occurred at the noon time of May a few days after I was discharged. I was at home as usual, I head a sudden "bang" sound. Immediately, I found the drainage tube under my arm was cracked. However, I didn't know the structure/mechanism of the drainage device, so I plugged the tube back into the vacuum flask. One day later, I noticed there was no drainage fluid in the tube and the negative pressure valve of the device had popped up. I also felt some pain under my arm. I was worried and became anxious.
My family called the doctors' office immediately. The doctor suggested that I should go back to hospital for further treatment as soon as possible. At that moment, I was suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy, and I was too weak to get up. It took more than six hours from Jiande (where I live) to Hangzhou by the car. We had no choice but to have a try in such urgent situation. Seeing Cao Yijia, the great nurse who took care of me when I was at the hospital, working on that day, I was relieved. Ms. Cao Yijia asked me some questions with great patience and empathy. Because of I was in such a hurry, I forgot to bring my health insurance card and as required by the insurance company, supplies cannot be obtained without it.
Ms. Cao Yijia comforted me and communicated with the doctor about the problem. In order to help prevent the progressiveness of edema on my arm and solve the urgent problem as soon as possible, she borrowed a vacuum negative bottle from the hospital and help fixed the urgent situation. When realized the main cause of the problem was that I didn't understand how to care for the device, Ms. Cao Yijia found a volunteered patient, to share his experience with me. She made sure that I understood how to care for myself before discharge. Her kindness, carefulness, patience and the warm-heart for patients touched me. My family said that they felt assured and less worried at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital.
When I was hospitalized, I witnessed the excellent skills of Ms. Cao Yijia. More importantly, she was willing to communicate with patients. Her friendly attitude brought patients a great deal of encouragement. She can give patients the confidence needed to win the battle of fighting against cancer. She also shared with the patients some effective ways for rehabilitation and relieving pain, which not only helped alleviate my pain, but also gave me the comfort for the spirit. Ms. Cao Yijia's enthusiasm and her great sense of responsibility for patients deeply moved me.
