Carlos attended a home visit with a very medically complex patient, and throughout the entire visit, he demonstrated a kind and caring attitude toward not only the patient but the entire extended family. He spoke to the patient like she was a typical child, which is not always the case for children with severe brain injury. During the drive, he made sure he was pointing out landmarks and familiar locations to the patient and was responding to her vocalizations like he was having a conversation with her. At her house, he was incredibly respectful of the family, delaying the delivery of medications so the family could just sit on the couch with her and get comfortable with the fact that their incredibly medically complex child was going to be coming home. The way in which he spoke to the family, both his tone and choice of words, was respectful and incredibly educational, taking complex medication schedules and delivery methods and making them easy to understand.
Carlos is also new to the inpatient rehab unit, and despite his significant nursing experience, he has come to the inpatient rehab unit to learn and grown his expertise. He is consistently flexible and always working to maximize the functional gains of patients, adjusting his medication delivery and bedside nursing care to maximize therapy time. He is an incredible asset to the inpatient rehabilitation team and is a wonderful member of our team.
Note: This is Carlos' 2nd DAISY Award!
